Where Atlantis Was | Foundations

In this quick article we briefly try to show again how we narrow down where in the world Atlantis can and can’t be. We start with the whole world and we go through all the main regions and give reasons for why they are all ruled out except for the Americas. The reasons are all based on identification details in the Atlantis Account of “Plato”, and based on extant geographical and historical knowledge. We have already surely found the site of the capital city of Atlantis, but alot of people keep favouring other locations and disfavouring ours, so we need to try to find how to get people to agree where Atlantis can and can’t be going by the details in the Account.

Asia/East/Orient (including Sundaland).
Atlantis can’t be in Asia because:

Atlantis was west of Egypt and Greece (and the Atlas Mountains and Pillars of Hercules), but Asia is east.Atlantis was “larger than Asia & Libya/Africa combined”.Atlantis is implied to be a separate landmass to “Asia & Libya”, “Europe & Asia”.Asia is not sunken/submerged.Atlantis was in the Atlantic. Although the Atlantic might be a sea and not the Atlantic ocean, Atlantis and the Atlantic were traditionally associated with the Atlantic Ocean (eg in Herodotus). Asia is not in the Atlantic.Asia is not an “island”.

Oceania/Pacifica /North Pacific/South Pacific /Austronesia /Australasia/Antipodes /Zealandia/Mu/Pan/Davisland/Hiva.
Atlantis can’t be in Oceania (except for continents bordering the east side) because:

Atlantis was a large landmass. There is no such sunken/submerged large landmass in the Pacific. There is an interventing landmass (Americas) between the Pacific and Europe/Africa.There are intervening landmasses (Asia, Australia) between Africa/Europe and the Pacific. The Atlanteans approached Egypt & Greece from the west not the east. If Atlantis was in the Pacific they are equally if not more likely to have approached Egypt from the east. Approaching from the west they’d have to cross the Americas and the Atlantic (though they could have have crossed the narrower Central America area). Even approaching from the east they’d have to pass between Australia & Asia and cross the Indian ocean or Asia.Atlantis was in the Atlantic. Although the Atlantic might be a sea and not the Atlantic ocean, Atlantis and the Atlantic were traditionally associated with the Atlantic Ocean (eg in Herodotus). Oceania is not in the Atlantic. (Though the “Atlantic” could have been both sides of Atlantis/Americas.)Atlantis can’t be in the ‘water hemisphere’ (the hemisphere/face of the earth mostly all water and not much land, centred on the Pacific).

Indian Ocean/Lemuria.
Atlantis can’t be in the Indian Ocean because:

Atlantis was west of Greece/Egypt, while the Indian Ocean is east.Atlantis was large. There is no large sunken/submerged landmass in the Indian Ocean.Atlantis was in the Atlantic. Although the Atlantic might be a sea and not the Atlantic ocean, Atlantis and the Atlantic were traditionally associated with the Atlantic Ocean (eg in Herodotus). The Indian Ocean is not in the Atlantic.

Australia.
Atlantis can’t be in Australia because:

Atlantis was west of Egypt & Greece. Australia is east.Australia is not sunken/submerged.No trace of Atlantis capital city and civilisation in Australia.Hardly anyone has placed Atlantis in Australia except one or a couple/few theorists.Australia’s climate etc is not conducive to civilisation and empire and worldwide geopolitical sea power. Atlantis and especially its plain was fertile and had many animals and plants and lakes and rivers, which doesn’t match Australia. No faultline in Australia. No elephants or horses or bulls in Australia? No large plain surrounded by highest mountains. The only major range is the Great Dividing Range which doesn’t seem to have much of a match.Atlantis had gold and copper and zinc. Australia doesn’t seem to have overly much of either.Atlantis was in the Atlantic. Although the Atlantic might be a sea and not the Atlantic ocean, Atlantis and the Atlantic were traditionally associated with the Atlantic Ocean (eg in Herodotus). Australia is not in the Atlantic.

North Atlantic Ocean/South Atlantic Ocean/Atlantis/8th Continent.
Atlantis can’t be in the Atlantic Ocean (excluding the continents bordering the Atlantic) because:

Atlantis was a large landmass. There is no sunken/submerged large landmass in the Atlantic ocean (excepting the continents bordering the Atlantic).Atlantis “sank”. The mid-Atlantic is emerging upwards and outwards not inwards and downwards.Atlantis was in the “Atlantic sea”. The Atlantic seemingly was a sea and not the Atlantic ocean. Evidence seems to favour the Atlantic sea maybe being lake Titicaca rather than the Atlantic ocean.

Arctic Ocean/North Polar.
If Atlantis was in the Arctic it would be more likely to be above Europe or the Atlantic or North America (or the Pacific?) and not above Asia (or the Pacific?) But in any case Atlantis can’t be in the Artic Ocean because:

Atlantis was a large landmass. There is seemingly no such sunken/submerged landmass in the Arctic (excluding continents and islands bordering the Artic such as Greenland).Civilisations mainly appear in temperate or sub-tropical climate zones, mainly the tropic of cancer latitude band and tropic of capricorn latitude band, they don’t occur in extreme cold/polar/arctic or hot/equatorial zones. (Though some of the arctic/polar areas were tropical before pole shifts.)The Atlanteans do not seem to have come down from north of Europe, they seem to have come from west of the Mediterranean/Africa/Europe.

Antarctica/Antarctic/South Polar.
If Atlantis were in Antarctica it would more likely be below the the western half of Africa or the Atlantic or South America (or the Pacific?) rather than below the eastern half of Africa or the Indian Ocean or Australia (or the Pacific Ocean?) But in any case we are fairly satisified that Atlantis can’t be in the Antarctic because:

Atlantis was a large landmass. Antarctica was two islands. No ice is mentioned in the Atlantis Account.Antarctica is not sunken/submerged.The Atlanteans seem to have come from west of the Mediterranean/Africa/Europe. Antarctica is not really west of all/some of those places. If Atlantis was in Antarctica chances are they would have also/instead have approached Egypt & Greece from the east side of Africa. No remains of the city and civilisation of Atlantis have yet been found in Antaratica. The Piri Reis map doesn’t seem to indicate any city and civilisation there?Civilisations mainly appear in temperate or sub-tropic climate zones, mainly the tropic of cancer latitude band and tropic of capricorn latitude band, they don’t occur in extreme cold/polar/arctic or hot/equatorial zones. (Though some of the antarctic/polar areas were tropical before pole shifts.) Only some of Antarctica was ice free before the last shift.)The distance is probably abit too far. There doesn’t seem to be any matching large plain surrounded by highest mountains. The Trans-Antarctic mountains don’t seem much of a match.

Africa/Libya.
If Atlantis was in Africa it would have to be on the western coast of Africa between Morocco and say Cape Verde Islands. Atlantis can’t be anywhere else in Africa, and it fairly surely can’t be in western Africa because:

Atlantis seems to be implied to be a separate landmass to “Asia & Libya”, “Europe & Libya”. Atlantis was larger than Asia & Libya combined.Atlantis is west of Egypt & Libya.
Atlantis is at least as far west as the Atlas Mountains, and the Pillars of Hercules.Atlantis is implied by “Plato” and Diodorus Siculus to be most distant.Atlantis was not in the small inner Mediterranean sea, it was in the Atlantic or the “real ocean”.No major certain remains found of Atlantis city and civilisation in Africa (excepting a few doubtful sites like Richat, Tritonis). The Atlanteans seem the have invaded both Africa/Libya and Europe from the west. If Atlantis was in Africa the Atlanteans are unlikely the have invaded Europe from the west?No faultline in western Africa, only one in the Mediterranean and one in East Africa (Rift Valley). No large plain surrounded by highest mountains. The only major ranges are the Atlas (Morocco) and the Drakensberge (South Africa).Atlantis had gold and copper and zinc. Africa doesn’t seem to have overly much of either.

Europe/Occident (including eastern Armorica Plate / Avalonia / Appalachia / Euramerica).
If Atlantis was in Europe it would have to be on the western coast of Europe. Atlantis can’t be anywhere else in Europe, and it fairly surely can’t be in western Europe because:

Atlantis seems to be implied to be a separate landmass to “Asia & Europe”, “Europe & Libya”.Atlantis had a system of canals “never seen in Europe”.Atlas is in Africa not in Europe, though Gades is in Europe. Gades in Spain is said in the Atlantis Account to only be a namesake of the one in Atlantis. Gades might be Agadir in Africa rather than Gades in Spain. The Account says/implies that Atlantis was not in the small inner Mediterranean sea, it was in the Atlantic or the “real ocean”.The Atlanteans seem the have invaded both Africa/Libya and Europe from the west. If Atlantis was in Europe the Atlanteans are unlikely the have invaded Africa from the west?Europe is not sunken/submerged.Atlantis was west of Tyrrhenia (Italy) and Greece.
Atlantis is at least as far west as the Atlas Mountains, Gades, and the Pillars of Hercules.Atlantis is implied by “Plato” and Diodorus Siculus to be most distant.I can’t seen any matching large plain surrounded by highest mountains in the western half of Europe. The only major ranges in western and northern Europe are in Iberia, Caledonia, and Norway, none of which seem to match very much except possibly Iberia. The Atlantis Account original language version says Atlantis was “from next (to) Libya” (not next Europe), and some other Atlantis texts also say Atlantis was some days sail from Africa (not from Europe), implying it was west of Africa (not north of Africa). Though some sources do say it was some days sail from Europe (not Africa), but this means it is not Europe but west of Europe. Strabo’s stades extension of Spain also implies Atlantis is south-west of Spain/Europe. (Compare an anthropomorphic map of Europe has the head as Iberia, and the crown on southwest Iberia.)No faultline in western Europe, only one in the Mediterranean.Atlantis had gold and copper and zinc. Europe doesn’t seem to have anymuch gold, nor does western Europe seem to have overly much copper or zinc except for the Tartessos and Cornwall areas.Europe is not an “island”.

Mediterranean (wine dark sea / Great Green / Great sea / Amurru / Upper Sea).
If Atlantis was in the Mediterranean it would have to be in the western Mediterranean, not the eastern Mediterranean. But even so we are sure that Atlantis can’t be in the Mediterranean sea because:

Atlantis was large and can not fit in the Mediterranean.Atlantis is stated to have been in the Atlantic and/or the real ocean, and not in the small inner Mediterranean sea.Atlantis was west of Asia, Greece, Tyrrhenia (Italy), Egypt, Libya. Atlantis was “next Libya” which implies west of Libya/Africa. Some sources say Atlantis was a number of days sail from (west) Africa or from (west) Europe.
Atlantis was at least as far as the Atlas Mountains, Gades, and the Pillars of Hercules.Atlantis is implied by “Plato” and Siculus to have been remote/distant. Atlantis was near the pillars of Hercules which were the most distant point of the world. The Greeks and Egyptians surely knew as far as Magna Grecia, Syracuse, Masillia, Carthage, Tartessos, Gades, Atlas, Erythia, Atlantic, Hesperides.Atlantis is implied to have been a separate landmass to “Europe & Libya”, “Europe & Asia”, “Asia & Libya”.

Greenland.
Atlantis can’t be in Greenland because:

There doesn’t seem to be any evidence of Atlantis city and civilisation in Greenland. Nor do the known features of Greenland seem to match those of Atlantis including the plain surrounded by highest mountains.Although there are evidences that Greenland was once tropical before pole shifts, it seems that the North Pole was previously in the Hudson Bay area, and that North America was covered by ice sheets, which seems to mean Greenland was too.No ice is mentioned in the Atlantis Account.Atlantis was “next Libya”.Atlantis seems to have been pretty large size. Greenland may not be large enough size to match.

Pangaea.
Atlantis can not be Pangaea because:

Atlantis was an “island” and is seemingly implied to be a separate landmass to “Europe & Asia”, “Asia & Libya”, “Europe & Libya”.Only Atlantis “sank” not anywhere else.

Americas/New World/Western Hemisphere (including western Euramerica / Apallachia / Avalonia / Armorica plate).
Atlantis can only be in the Americas.

Atlantis can’t be any of the other landmasses or oceans (as seen above).Atlantis is implied to be a separate landmass to “Europe & Libya”, “Europe & Asia”, “Asia & Libya”.Atlantis was a large landmass. Americas are the next largest landmass to the Old World. The Atlanteans invaded Europe and Libya from the west. The Americas are to the west of Libya/Africa and/or Europe. The original language version says Atlantis was “next (to) Libya”. South America is next to Africa. The Americas can not be the ‘Opposite Continent’ because there is no sunken/submerged Atlantis between the Americas and the Old World.Atlantis can’t be in the Atlantic Ocean because there is no sunken/landmass there, but the continents bordering the Atlantic are also in the Atlantic and Atlantis can match them.Although the Americas are not sunken/submerged there are possible explanations for this. The Account is not clear whether the whole large island “sank” or only the royal island capital city “sank”. The Account doesn’t say what happened all the time between the “sinking” event and the present day. If the whole large island “sank” it could have been continental shift or crust displacement or some other explanations.Atlantis is implied by “Plato” and Siculus to have been most distant.Civilisations generally arose in the tropic of cancer latitude band and tropic of capricorn latitude band, both of which pass through the Americas.Atlantis had gold and copper and zinc. Mexican and Peruvian civilisations are famous for their gold. The Americas have major deposits of copper and zinc in some places like Peru. Anaku “tin land” of Mesopotamian might match Tiwanaku &/or Wanaku of Peruvian/Bolivian.Atlantis had elephants, and horses. “Prehistoric” Americas had elephants and mastodon and toxodon, and horses.According top geopolitics sea power came before modern landpower. So Atlantis would be near the coast. The Americas being in the hemisphere with less land and population also suits sea power according to geopolitics.
Atlantis and Poseidon are associated with water/sea/ocean. Geopolitically the south and west hemispheres have more water and less land than the north and east hemispheres. The Americas has remains of matching city and civilisation in Peru/Bolivia (and/or Mexico).Atlantis and Tiahuanaco may match Dilmun/Iatukki and/or Durash or Durili which was “remote, in the west, beyond or to the north of Egypt”, which details could match South America. (In Egyptian and Arabian south was top/up, so “north” might not mean our north.)There is a match for “the mid-point of the longest side of the island”.Atlantis in Kircher’s map looks pretty similar to South or North America closer to the Old World than North or South America.Atlantis was in the Atlantic. Although the Atlantic might be a sea and not the Atlantic ocean, Atlantis and the Atlantic were traditionally associated with the Atlantic Ocean (eg in Herodotus). America can be said to be in the Atlantic ocean (eg NATO), especially if the Atlantic was surrounding the whole of Atlantis as it would then match both the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean (and Antarctic and/or Arctic).
The Atlantic sea seemingly may well match lake Titicaca in Peru.North America and/or South America qualifies as an “island”.Egypt and Greece are not “unreachable” by sea from the Americas. This “unreachable” claim is only an opinion/assertion it is not definite proven fact. The Atlantis Account and Diodorus Siculus clearly say/imply that Atlantis was most remote/distant. So people can’t just assert that Atlantis “can’t be too far” and “must be reachable”. People have to reconcile/balance both. We know the ancients had alot more seafaring ability than modern humans previously believed. Moreover there may have been changes since those times which make trans-Atlantic travel longer/harder than it may have been before, eg sea/air currents change, continental shift or expanding globe (widening the Atlantic), pole shift changing directions/latitudes, rise in sea levels (submerging continental shelves and widening the ocean), decline in human ability/will and knowledge. Heyerdahl proved that ancient voyages were possible. Hancock said the oceans/seas were highways not barriers. Geopolitics says sea power came before land power. The Popul Vuh says the first race explored the 4 corners of the globe. The maps of the ancient sea kings proves they knew more of the world than critics assume/assert (eg the Piri Reis map). The known world contracted after Atlantis’ demise. We know Vikings and Polynesians and some other peoples made quite amazing voyages. The Great Pyramid’s geodesy and the Piri Reis map being centered on Cairo both show that the ancients knew the whole world’s landmasses. The Atlantis Account itself implies they knew other landmasses other than just the Old World, and the Account seems to have geopolitical knowledge (eg “real ocean” versus the Mediterranean, “larger than Asia & Libya”, etc). Another point is that the Account implies that Atlantis controlled the whole large island of Atlantis and many other islands and parts of the Opposite Continent as well as the Western Mediterranean, and the Atlantis Account and/or the Medinet Habu account of the invasion of the Sea Peoples implies that the Atlanteans invaded Europe and Libya and Asia over a period of time, and they only later rallied together all their forces to invade Egypt and Greece. So people who scathingly trash our Atlantis location because they deem it is “too far” are blatantly disbelieving the Atlantis Account’s words, not just criticising us. Moreover incredulous disbeliefs and opinions that something “can’t” be possible do not prove/disprove anything against a thesis, and they do not erase all the other supporting strong details matches evidences, they only mean that there are a few remaining seemingly difficult challenges to work out. Arthur C Clarke said “When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong.”

So that in short is how we personally narrowed down were Atlantis can and can’t be in the world as early as 1999. Of course there are a number of details points which are disputed among Atlantologists such as the location of the Pillars of Hercules. But the general “traditional” view works. There are also some incredulous doubts of critics about our location in the Americas, but these are not impossible to answer. Following on from narrowing down Atlantis to the Americas we further searched all around the Americas for the site of the capital city and we found only one place which matches all the details such as the large plain surrounded by highest mountains, the remains of civilisation and the concentric circles city, etc. That location is Peru/Bolivia. We then searched all around Peru/Bolivia including all around lake Titicaca and we eventually seemingly pretty surely found the site of the concentric circles capital city at Tiahuanaco/Tiwanaku and not anywhere else. At first we doubted and dismissed/disregarded the site and we did not like or want it to be the site and wanted it to be somewhere else, but we were forced to accept the convincing evidences and we came to accept it and afterwards to like it. We were especially impressed by evidence of at least one or two concentric circles in the ground (in map/diagram/plan of the site), and by the Akapana seeming to match the big hill / small mountain dwelling of Clito in the center of the city (again in map/diagram/plan of the site). The Akapana seems pretty unique in all the world. Later we found even more amazing strong supporting matches evidences. The Inca Picture from the Coricancha (in Cuzco) depicts a number of things matching things in the Atlantis Account including the large rectangular plain with surrounding ditch and criss-crossing channels. We found that the upward spade symbol in Andean art is sometimes seen to rise from concentric circles which seems to be an Atlas pillar motif rising from the concentric circles capital city of Atlantis. And many more evidences which we can’t list here but which are given in our free online ‘Atlantis in America/Andes’ ebook.

Notes.

Evidences for “the whole island” of Atlantis being “large” include:
Atlantis was larger than Asia & Libya combined.
Atlantis had highest mountains.
Atlantis had a large plain.
Atlantis had many species of animals including elephants, horses, bulls.
Atlantis had 10 kings regions.
Atlantis had a large population as assertained by the size of its army.
Atlantis controlled many other islands and parts of the opposite continent and the western Mediterranean.
Atlantis had cities, villages, lakes, rivers, mountains, plains, mines in various parts.
Atlantis supplied much of what they needed.
Some ancient sources say Atlantis was a “large” island. Atlantis was a “land”.Evidences for Atlantis being remote/distant include:
“Plato” said the Atlanteans were “invaders”.
Atlantis was at a “distant point in the Atlantic”.
They were “unmixed with other mortal stock”.
Atlantis was near the Pillars of Hercules which were the most distant point of the world.
Diodorus Siculus said Atlantis was “out in deep off Libya a number of days sail to the west”, “many days sailing across the Atlantic”, and that Atlantis was “at the ends of the earth”, “remotest” (Dio Sic 3:56).
Atlantis might match Dilmun/Iatukki and/or Durash or Durili which was “remote, in the west, beyond or to the north of Egypt”.Evidences Atlantis was west of Italy & Libya include:
The Account says they invaded Europe and Libya/Africa as far as Tyrrhenia and Egypt and tried to take Egypt and Greece, which implies they came from west of Italy not from east of Egypt/Greece.
Atlantis was in the Atlantic. Although the Atlantic sea might not be the Atlantic Ocean, it was nevertheless traditionally placed in that vicinity/direction.
Atlantis was beyond/before the Pillars of Hercules. The Pillars were the most distant point of the (known ancient) world. Although the location of the Pillars is disputed, we know that they must have been as far as the ones in Gibraltar because the Greeks and Egyptians surely knew as far as Masillia, Tartessos, Gades, the Atlas Mountains, Erythia, the Hesperides. The Account implies that Atlantis was at least as far as Gades in Spain and Atlas in north-west Africa.
The Account seems to say Atlantis was not in the inner Mediterranean sea but was in the outer “real ocean”.
The original language version is purported to say the Atlanteans came “from next (to) Libya”, which surely means on the west of Africa not the north of Africa.
Some sources like Diodorus Siculus say Atlantis was some days saild from (west) Africa, or from (west) Europe.
The Account says the Atlanteans invaded Europe & Libya & Asia.
